Many things stick out about shows in Texas and this is just one. It starts here in Minnesota and I’m not sure how the conversation started but one night when my family and I were out at a club in Minneapolis to see Slug and Mikey do some spoken word (probably a poetry slam) I think it was an Irish place downtown. Anyway Slug, Mikey and I were back stage (which was down stairs if I remember) talking about going to Texas. Slug was giving me all the reasons why I should let Mikey go. The one thing that struck me then and I still remember is him saying “It’s his time to shine” Well I was getting pissed off so I ended the conversation. Later I called Slug and told him don’t do that again. If we are having an adult conversation it’s not in front of Mikey, he’s not the adult, I am. That was when I realized that I had to tell people this is an adult conversation which means you don’t have them in front of Mikey, running to him about this is what she said (that’s the telephone game). Yes Mikey was very smart, talented, wise beyond his years but at this time he was under age and couldn’t even get medical treatment without a parent or guardian. But some conversations need to stay between the adults. I was the parent and if there are things or feelings I want Mikey to know I’ll tell him. Off we go to Texas Maxx, Mikey, Slug, me and my friend. Here’s a bit of what I remember. The highways and the rain. I think driving out of Austin we had a super hard rain storm, couldn’t see 5 feet in front of the car. The highways back then weren’t as big as they are now. They have the highways running up and down to street level. So unlike most cities where the highways are at or above the city street level, Austin come up to street level and then goes down. Well with the down pour the lower parts of the highway filled with water. It was kinda crazy the car would just hydroplane. Mikey, Maxx, Tiffany (my friend) were in the back seat. Slug was up front with me. I think I remember Tiffany in the back complaining how Mikey and Maxx won’t stop talking about the show. I do remember Slug asking me if I wanted him to drive. I said no I’m a control freak if you can’t tell. What I wanted him to do was watch the road so we stay on it. We made it out and headed to Dallas. That’s a bit of a Texas trip. Thanks for supporting, loving and reading. Love Kathy
